Not only is The Aqua the tallest building in the world designed by a female lead Architect, it is the largest green roof in the city of Chicago. Countryside installed this 2 acre green roof utilizing lightweight soils in combination with Styrofoam blocks and “peanuts” to maintain load restrictions while creating visual interest with berms and grade changes. The Aqua boasts an 83,000SFterrace with lush gardens, gazebos, pools, hot tubs, a walking/running track and a fire pit.
Aside from providing a welcoming haven to the residents of The Aqua, the green roof helps to lower temperatures during the hot summer months. In addition, it uses plants to reduce storm water runoff, reduce building energy requirements and create conditions for longer lasting roof systems.
The Aqua is part of The 28 Acre Lakeshore East Development formerly occupied by the Illinois Central Railroad train yard for most of the last century. In addition to landscaping the entire 6 acre park, Countryside was also the chosen landscape contractor to complete the majority of other buildings surrounding the park: The Shoreham, The Tides, The Lancaster, The Coast, The Regatta and Benton Park Place to name a few.
